CHOICE
The Coalition Halting Obesity in Children Everywhere has worked since 2011
to empower communities to embrace healthier living.

Our Mission and Vision

We envision a world where people encourage each other to live healthier lives through wellness, nutrition, and physical activity. Our mission is therefore to empower communities to embrace healthier living.

Our 2020 Goal

Inspired by the American Heart Association, CHOICE seeks to reduce the prevalence of childhood obesity by 20% by 2020. To do so, CHOICE believes on approaching childhood obesity with a three-pronged approach, championing community, policy, and research efforts.

Our Team

CHOICE was co-founded by Tiffany and Athena Kan when they were high school students. CHOICE has stayed true to its origins; we are a student-led organization dedicated to fighting for our nation's youth. We strongly believe in the power of the student voice to effect change in their communities and the rest of the world.

What we do

Because public health is so complex, CHOICE has always championed efforts that address issues from multiple angles. We primarily focus on efforts rooted in community, policy, and/or research.

Health Fair

Since 2012, CHOICE has partnered with the River Hill Community Association to host an annual health fair. Every year, thousands of people and over 40 vendors participate.

9090 Wellness Policy

CHOICE representatives served on the Howard County Board of Education 9090 wellness policy committee, changing the policy from the bottom third in the nation to top in the nation according to the Rudd Center, affecting 50,000 students.

Fundraising

CHOICE has partnered with the American Heart Association and other organizations to raise approximately $80,000 for health and wellness programs.

Health Care Disparities

Co-founder Athena Kan collabored with researchers at Johns Hopkins to conduct a research project on health care disparities. She presented her research at the international NIH Minority Health and Health Disparities Grantees' Conference.

Other Research

Co-founder Tiffany Kan collaborated with the National Institute on Drug Abuse to research the effects of methamphetamine on the brain and present at an NIH symposium. She has also worked with Johns Hopkins to investigate different orthopedic surgical procedures and the VCU School of Dentistry to research bone regeneration.

Other Policy Efforts

CHOICE members have testified in favor and against health policies on the county and state levels. Currently, CHOICE is partnering with Real Food for Kids - Montgomery to improve nutrition and health in Maryland.
